The 10 Brygada Kawalerii ( German  10th Cavalry Brigade ) was the first fully motorized large formation of the Polish Army , during the Second Republic . It carried this name since 1921. From 1930 to 1939 the large association carried the designation 10 Brygada Kawalerii . It was commonly known as the "Black Cap" or the Black Brigade .

In 1942 the brigade was reclassified to an armored division of the Polish Armed Forces . This was also known by the Western Powers as Maczeks - 1st Panzer Division .

Brigade history

At the end of September 1938, following the conclusion of the Munich Agreement , the brigade occupied part of the Czech Olsa area , which was annexed by Poland in violation of international law. In September 1939 it was assigned to the "Kraków Army" and was used for the first time during the attack on Poland . In the Jordanów Battle in the Beskids , she fought in heavy losses with the corps of General Eugen Beyer and the armored force under Lieutenant General Alfred Ritter von Hubicki . On September 19, the Polish brigade under Colonel Maczek withdrew over the Jablunyzkyj Pass into Hungarian territory. They were interned there.

equipment

The cavalry brigade consisted of two regiments . Maczek commanded a total of nine combat groups of around 4,500 men, equipped with armored cars, tankettes and artillery. In terms of heavy weapons, the brigade was equipped with 4 self-propelled howitzers 100 mm, 4 cannons 75 mm and 30 cannons 37 mm . Until 1939 the Panzerwaffe had only 16 light tanks type Vikers-E and 26 light tankettes TKS own production, in addition 259 Sokol motorcycles and 459 cars. The tankettes were optionally equipped with a machine gun (" Hotchkiss-25 ") or a 20 mm cannon (nkm wz. 38FK). The motorcycles were armed with a 7.62 mm IMG 28 machine gun.
