11P / Tempel-Swift-LINEAR is a periodic comet of the Jupiter family . The comet's orbit runs between Earth and Saturn with an orbital period of 6.372 years.
Discovery story
Ernst Wilhelm Leberecht Tempel discovered this comet on November 27, 1869, and it was later observed by Lewis Swift ( Warner Observatory ) on October 11, 1880. After 1908 the comet had not been seen and was thought to be lost. On December 7, 2001, the comet was rediscovered as part of the LINEAR project, but could not be observed in perihelion in 2008 because it was too close to the sun.
