reception
In the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung in 1993 Matthias Hannemann praised him as "portrayed fluently, stylishly photographed and even musically gorgeous". The series is "quite rough, quite hard, with a lot of bare skin". But there is “not a bad actor or a disappointing actress”. Director Giuseppe Gagliardi created a moral painting "in which one can find in an uncanny way much of what is being discussed in current discussions about the rise of populists or the relationship between powerful men and young women."
In Spiegel writes Christian Buss , the art of the series lies in the fact "to fill the pointed characters such with life that we follow them in the most extreme corners of the political spectrum and darkest corner of the lust for power." Buß is enthusiastic about the “palatable panorama pictures and clever person constellations”, but also about the soundtrack with played songs from the early nineties. 1993 was after Gomorrah "another reality-saturated serial masterpiece from Italy".
On Zeit-Online , Carolin Ströbele finds it astonishing "how current the series is despite the 25-year time gap". Beyond Italian domestic politics, 1993 was a lesson about "what can happen in a country when an abyss suddenly opens up in the political center of a country."
