Manufacturing

The starting material for the production of 2,3-dibromo-1,4-benzoquinone is 1,4-benzoquinone , which is initially brominated with elemental bromine in positions 2 and 3, with 2,3-dibromohydroquinone being formed as an intermediate . The desired compound is then produced by oxidation with iron (III) chloride .
