The Dead Man is a 1392  m high mountain in the Berchtesgaden Alps , at the southern end of the Lattenberg massif . It lies on the municipality border between Ramsau near Berchtesgaden ( Gnotschaft Schwarzeck ) and Bischofswiesen ( Berchtesgadener Bürgerwald ).

Location and surroundings

The dead man lies between Ramsau near Berchtesgaden in the southwest and Bischofswiesen in the northeast. Neighboring mountains are the Götschenkopf ( 1305  m ) in the east and the Schmuckenstein ( 1332  m ) in the northwest. A ridge stretches to the south, carrying the Hirscheck ( 1242  m ) and the Rubble Mountain ( 1162  m ). The dead man is overgrown with coniferous forest up to the summit. From Ramsau it is accessed through the Hochschwarzeck ski area .

When visibility is good, the Toten Mann gives you a good overview of the Berchtesgaden Alps with the peaks of Watzmann , Hochkalter , Reiteralpe and Untersberg as well as the Wimbachtal .

In the summit area is the Bezoldhütte , the previous building of which from 1883 was one of the oldest mountain huts in the Berchtesgaden Alps.

Origin of name

The mountain owes its name to a legend according to which a hiker from outside, contrary to the warnings of the locals, went on a winter hike to the then nameless mountain and was said to have frozen to death up there. The body was only found by hunters the following spring, it is said.

reachability

The Dead Man can be reached in a few minutes from the Hirschkaseralm, the mountain station of the chairlift up from Schwarzeck , not far to the southwest. A road also leads to this inn. Hiking trails in the valley lead from Schwarzeck, from the Gerstreit car park, from the Söldenköpfl inn and from Bischofswiesen to the Dead Man.

particularities

  • In the summit area there is also a Marien shrine with the container for the summit book .
  • Bezold made one of the first mountain panoramas from the all-round view of the Dead Man. The technique of the albertotype was used.
