The Wimbachtal is a more than 10 km long high valley of the Berchtesgaden Alps in the center of the Berchtesgaden National Park in the municipality of Ramsau . Located between Watzmann in the east and Hochkalter in the west, the valley begins under the Trischübel pass ( 1774  m ) between Watzmann and Steinernem Meer and soon moves steadily in a north-easterly direction.

Geography and geology

The Wimbach valley is characterized by huge debris flows, which is why the upper part of the valley is also called Wimbachgries . At the top of the valley, they are a good 1.5 km wide. The weathering material pulls down from the area of the Palfelhörner . The rubble is constantly in motion under the influence of gravity, but hardly noticeably. After heavy rain, larger material loads can be observed.

The Wimbach valley drains via the eponymous Wimbach . In the upper valley, the huge debris flows determine the picture. There, tributaries arise above ground, but then seep into the loose material and merge underground. In dry weather, the stream rises at about 800  m above sea level. NN in several sources close together from the rubble, less than three kilometers from the mouth. A contained side spring serves as a water supply for a large part of the population in the south of the Berchtesgadener Land . In the lower section the Wimbach runs through the short but worth seeing Wimbachklamm . A few hundred meters after leaving it, it flows into the Ramsauer Ache opposite Ramsau-Hirschpoint from the right .

During the Ice Ages , glaciers carved out the valley and deepened it. The bed of the rock is now more than 300 meters below the surface of the debris flows that fill the valley floor. Before it was graveled, the Wimbachgries was probably filled with a lake. In contrast to the Königssee on the other side of the Watzmann , which is surrounded by firmer Dachstein limestone , the Ramsaudolomit in the area of the Wimbach valley offered less resistance to erosion .

biology

A botanical specialty in the valley is the Spirke , an upright mountain pine species . Otherwise it occurs almost exclusively in the Western Alps, but is also found frequently here in the Wimbach Valley.

bases

The Gasthaus Wimbachschloss at 937  m above sea level is open from the beginning of May until All Saints' Day . It can be reached in about an hour from the Wimbachbrücke car park. The inn is only set up for day guests and does not offer overnight stays.

The Wimbachgrieshütte , 1327  m , is a fully managed, private nature friend's hut with overnight accommodation, without discounts for members of the Alpine Club, in the summer season . It can be reached from Wimbachschloss in an hour's hiking time. The hut can also be used as a base for Watzmann tours, because the descent from the Watzmann southern tip leads to Wimbachgries after crossing the Watzmann or crossing the east face.

Possible tours

View from Trischübel to the upper Wimbachgries

The most convenient way to get to the valley is from the Ramsau district of Wimbachbrücke at an altitude of approx. 630  m .

The Sigeretplatte St. Bartholomä on the Königssee can be reached in around four hours from the Grieshütte via Trischübel . From the Trischübel pass, the Hirschwieskopf ( 2114  m ) can also be climbed in around two hours , from where you can see the 1,800-meter-high Watzmann east face and the ridge of the Schönfeldschneid, which rises abruptly to the Watzmann south point. The further route over the Sigeretplatte is only recommended for persistent hikers who do not suffer from vertigo; fuses are attached at exposed locations.

Shortly above the Wimbachschloss, a hunting trail runs right through the moat to the Hochalmscharte ( 1599  m ). Following rudimentary climbing tracks, one arrives over the Hochalm to the rubble cone under the Eisbodenenscharte. You reach the Eisbodenenscharte ( 2049  m ) over the rubble and through a steep gully with insurance . To the north over a narrow path one arrives at the Schärtenspitze ( 2153  m ), which can be easily "taken" from there. The normal route leads down into the Blaueiskar to the Blaueishütte . From there it goes back to Ramsau via hiking trails. A whole day must be estimated for this tour (difference in altitude 1500 m).

From the Wimbachtal , the ascent to the Steinerne Meer , the Kärlingerhaus on the Funtensee or the Ingolstädter Haus on the Großer Hundstod is easily possible via the Trischübel pass . The huts are managed during the summer season. The path through the Stone Sea is long and very dangerous, especially when visibility is poor, for example through fog, many have already got lost here.

The ski tour known in the Berchtesgadener Land as the Große Reibn ends with a descent through the Wimbachtal.

The entire valley is closed to mountain bikers .
