Ramsaudolomit

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Ramsaudolomit is a series of layers in the Northern Limestone Alps, which consists mainly of dolomite rock .

Geology and conceptual history

From a geological point of view, it is in the Middle Triassic period, i. H. mainly in the Ladin in the milieu of subtropical lagoons. After the folding of the Alps with their ceiling movements, it is now in the area of the Berchtesgaden Alps as the base of various local mountain units ( Lattengebirge , Reiter Alm , Watzmann , Hochkalter ). Due to its brittle consistency, it has broken up many times in the course of the tectonic nappe movements and is essentially brecciated . That is why the Ramsaudolomit is particularly noticeable in this area as a debris builder, which can be observed very impressively in the Wimbachgries , a valley drowned in debris. The debris filling is up to 300 m thick here. It can also be found on the southern flank of the Dachstein massif and as the base zone of the Gesäuse Mountains .

The name goes back to the occurrence on the southern slopes of the Reiter Alpe, i.e. towards the Hirschbichl and Klausbachtal in Ramsau near Berchtesgaden . The geologist Emil Böse coined the name in 1895 after he found fossils in this area that enabled him to determine more precisely. When using the name Ramsaudolomite , the mapping geologist does not have to determine whether the dolomite rock comes from the Middle or Upper Triassic . This is usually extremely difficult to determine because fossils are missing in the dolomite rocks or have become illegible due to diagenesis . Separation of the upper and lower rock portions in the terrain is only possible where strata from the era of the Karn (lower Upper Triassic) have been preserved; the lower part is then called Wetterstein dolomite , the upper main dolomite or Dachstein dolomite . This latter classification based on the Ramsau am Dachstein ( Trauth  1925), which also includes lime above the Raibler level , is seen as somewhat unfortunate in modern geology, especially for the "upper" dolomite of the Mandling range in the Ennstal (Mandlinger dolomite scales ) also was Tisoveckalk ( Lein  1971) or Heller mass dolomite suggested as a name, a type locality on Waxenegg ( Mandl  2005; see also alpine limestone history of research).

composition

Ramsaudolomit contains 99.2% dolomite , has a bulk density of 2.85 to 2.95 g / cm² and a pH value between 10.1 and 10.3.

use

In the Oberjettenberg dolomite works in Schneizlreuth at the foot of the Reiter Alpe, Ramsaudolomite is mined for industrial use. There are further quarries in the Saalachtal between Jettenberg and Reichenhall, and in the Lammertal on the north side of the main road between Unter- and Oberscheffau .
