Han-na is a good singer but works in phone sex. In addition, she provides the voice for the well-known pop star Ammy. Han-na is enormously overweight and can therefore not perform in public as a singer, although her voice is very well received. She secretly loves the music producer Sang-jun. This is how she endures her fate. Until one day she happened to find out that she was actually only tolerated because of her voice. She plans to take her own life. However, it turns out differently and by chance she ends up with one of her phone sex customers, who is a cosmetic surgeon by trade. She gets him to operate on her and after a long break and rehabilitation, Hanna reappears as an unrecognizable person. Not even her best friend Jung-min recognizes her. However, she opens up to her friend and together they invent a new identity for Han-na. From now on she calls herself Jenny and poses as an American of Korean origin. She also goes to an audition for the pop star Ammy, but this brings her her own record deal. She signs a contract with Sang-jun and sings the song “Maria” as her debut song.

Meanwhile, Ammy is desperate to find Han-na because she needs her voice again. That's why she begins to take care of Han-na's father in the hope of getting to Han-na. Due to entanglements, however, she then realizes that the new Jenny is Han-na. Sang-jun also realizes that Jenny, to whom he feels very attracted, is old Han-na. He reveals to her that he will definitely make a record with her, but he distances himself from her. Then a world collapses for Han-na. She took the enormous burden of cosmetic surgery, changed her entire body and diet, only to find out in the end that it was in vain.

At her concert she then announces that she is not really Jenny, but Han-na. Moved by her tearful confession, the audience began to shout “Don't worry!”. In the end, Han-na records a new record as Kang Han-na. She has won many fans through her story, but there are still envious people who make life difficult for her.

reception

Outside of Asia, 200 Pounds of Beauty was only shown at a few festivals without receiving special attention from the media. The acting performances, especially of the leading actress Kim Ah-jung, were generally rated as good. The All Movie Guide criticizes, however, that the film does not deal factually enough with the serious topic of cosmetic surgery. Jay Seaver from eFilmCritic.com also draws the conclusion that the film makes an effort, but still doesn't quite work. James Mudge of BeyondHollywood.com calls 200 Pounds Beauty one of the best South Korean romantic comedies in recent years.

Soundtrack

The theme song of the film is a cover version of the song "Maria" by the band Blondie . Actress Kim Ah-jung sings the song herself.
