2 is a choreography for two people by Tao Ye and Duan Ni , which was also premiered by these two dancers on June 2, 2012 in Singapore .

Title, dates

Tao Ye: “Currently the names of my creative works are based on a series of numbers. I hope to be able to shake off the conventions of language that affect the audience before they have even seen the performance. ”Consequently, this work bears the number 2 because it is danced by two people. The concept comes from Tao Ye , the music from Xiao He , the costumes from Li Min . The lighting design for the premiere was done by Wang Peng , then by Ma Yue . The work lasts fifty minutes.

The work is commissioned by the Singapore Arts Festival , the NorrlandsOperan in Umeå and the Dansmakers Amsterdam .

At the beginning, both dancers lie motionless on the white floor for a long time, feet facing the audience. ... they stretch out briefly, move their hands, one foot, raise one part of the body, lower the other. “The couple, dressed in overalls with wide trousers, seem to merge again and again with the floor that supports them.” Both are bald. The clothes are androgynous, like the dance. There is no such thing as eroticism, people are thrown back on their existence. After all, they grow up, they dance, sometimes synchronously, sometimes complementarily, mostly independently of one another. Two people are constantly related, but not related. They never touch each other. “One thing that all of my pieces have in common is that there is no difference between the sexes. So there is no such conventional relationship between men and women. In the piece '2' I am therefore not actually on stage with my wife Duan Ni, but rather we represent two assertions or points. "

Towards the end of the work it becomes pitch dark, a pause while the soundscape continues. There is light and for several minutes the white dance floor remains untouched in the picture. Left, right and behind black curtains, above - at the Viennese performances - the ceiling of historicism , largely covered by a few batteries headlights . Nothing rules. From the background, the two dancers run in front of the audience, stand up, think about it, go to themselves. The strongest moment of a strong evening. The piece ends in immobility and contemplation.

music

Xiao He's music begins with minutes of rustling, reminiscent of a non-functioning television, and can also be interpreted as background noise. Rhythmics only emerge occasionally , rarely chromatics , never harmonics . The enervating character over wide areas is just as evident as the poetic passages or the silence . Xiao He has "found an electronic sound score that suggests the dynamics of liquids."

Tao Ye: “The attempt to label something as western or eastern only shows how limited human perception is.” Furthermore: “There are various associations with my pieces. One sees similarities with calligraphy, the second with painting and the third with Chinese shadow boxing. I am looking for forms of movement in dance and of course they can also exist in other art forms, but for me there is no direct connection. "
