Light design is an area of light planning that deals with the design aspects as a key point. It can be an architectural , decorative or theater- oriented design.

Lighting design can compensate for the aesthetic deficiency in technical lighting planning and integrate into an existing architectural or interior design environment. The key points of lighting design in architecture are, on the one hand, the design of the right lighting and, on the other hand, the use of lights that correspond to the furnishings. In the past, Italy was the main supplier of corresponding lights and systems in Europe. In the meantime, however, the main impetus is coming from the Netherlands and above all from Belgium.

There are still no defined bases for the profession of lighting designer. The Professional Lighting Designers' Association (PLDA) endeavored with training programs to make the term uniformly understandable. On December 3rd, 2014 the Federation of international Lighting Designers (FILD) was founded with the aim of defining conditions and protecting the profession of lighting designer.

In the theater or in the event equipment automatic lighting designers work with other materials and equipment as well as other principles in which the artistic result is above the practicability in everyday life.

For a number of years now, LED technology has made a completely new way of working in the field of lighting design and planning possible. When LED products for indoor and outdoor areas are ready for the market , many designers and planners are less concerned with classic design and more with energy-efficient lighting.

Networks

Professional Lighting Designers' Association (PLDA)

In 1993, a European network of lighting designers was launched in Germany, initially called the European Lighting Designers 'Association (ELDA, later ELDA +) and in 2007 the title Professional Lighting Designers' Association (PLDA). The main task was the professional development in lighting design. The focus was on the evaluation and further development of contemporary lighting design practice and the development of training and study programs. Further topics were the history of architecture-related lighting design, the basics of light physics, lighting technology, lighting design and light perception. The organization filed for bankruptcy in 2014.

Transnational Tanteidan - Lighting Detectives (TNT)

Leading Japanese lighting designers, including Kaoru Mende, founded a network in 1990 under the name "Shomei Tanteidan" (German: "light detectives") with the aim of promoting the reflective use and design of artificial light. The cooperation with Ulrike Brandi (Hamburg) and Aleksandra Stratimirovic (Belgrade and Stockholm) was the cornerstone for international cooperation. In 2000 the network Transnational Tanteidan - Lighting Detectives was founded. The common goal is the analysis and development of an international lighting culture that takes technical, ecological, design and perception-physiological aspects equally into account.

Awards

Since 2002, the Design Plus Award for light and luminaire design has been advertised at the international trade fair for lighting and building automation at Messe Frankfurt , Light + Building , in Frankfurt am Main . Since 2006, exemplary lighting designs have been awarded the Prix Lumière by the Swiss Lighting Society . The German Lighting Design Prize has been awarded annually since 2011 and awarded in thirteen categories.
