Stiletto (artist)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Stiletto Studios , or Stiletto for short , bourgeois Frank Schreiner (* 1959 in Rüsselsheim ), is a German author of New German Design .

Life

Chairs 1983

From 1980 to 1981 Stiletto studied mechanical engineering at the TU Berlin . From 1982 to 1986 he studied visual communication at the Berlin University of the Arts . From 1982 he was a participant and co-organizer of several neoist festivals. In 1988 he was a master student in Nam June Paik's class at the Düsseldorf Art Academy and artist in residence at MoMA PS1 in New York .

His artistic focus was mainly on the use of office, hobby - and DIY technology for Mail Art , Copy Art , self-publishing artists' books , instant art , no budget film , stereoscopic photography and proprietary DIY - 3D copy graphics , Bricolage -, AV - and later also holographic installations for a time.

Stiletto's best-known work is the Consumer's Rest Lounge Chair from 1983, an "upside down" cantilever wire chair based on Charles Eames ' Wire Chair and Harry Bertoia's Diamond Chair , which, as a critically ironic design simulation based on the principle of the objet trouvé, is transformed from one by minimal interventions Supermarket shopping trolley was created. For the first time through publications by the design critic Christian Borngräber , Stiletto became known as an artist of New German Design with this and other objects from 1985 .

Before that, Stiletto was present in the context of the post-punk culture of what was then West Berlin as a media artist with short films in the experimental film festival scene such as the International Experimental Film Workshop Osnabrück . He filmed z. B. with Super 8 cameras that were thrown from an observation tower and destroyed in the process ( Camerakiller from 1984), or mockumented a motorcycle race ride through his shop apartment ( FORMULA Super VIII from 1982, which in 1983 with a simultaneous motorcycle ride through the hall of the Arsenal cinemas at the International Forum of Young Cinema at the Berlinale).

Interactive room installations such as coffee end of broadcast and TV diner , which were shown at Ars Electronica in 1991 and at the Berlin Academy of the Arts in 1994 , connect coffee house- like communication rooms with total video surveillance that is both directly visible to guests and "invisible" ones. Audio monitoring by microphones hanging over the tables, whose presence was played down surprisingly effectively by a camp- like camouflage with cheap plastic lampshades. The video installations , ironically called “ interpassive ”, were also able to be used by visitors as “ Speakers' Corner ” for uncensored, instant television broadcasts through the Berlin Open Channel .

Since the 1990s he has been running a lighting fixture construction company called DESIGN VERTReiB full-time .
