Gert Selle

Gert Selle (* 1933 in Saarbrücken ) is a German art educator and design theorist . He coined the term aesthetic education and wrote standard works on design history .

life and work

Gert Selle studied German , art history and art education in Frankfurt am Main and Kassel . 1960–1967 he was an art teacher in Frankfurt am Main. Subsequently, until 1972 lecturer at the Werkkunstschule, later technical college in Darmstadt . In 1973 he was appointed to the Chair of Fine Arts - Visual Communication at the PH Lower Saxony in Braunschweig, later TU Braunschweig . In 1981 Selle changed to the professorship for theory, didactics and practice of aesthetic education at the University of Oldenburg . In 1999 he retired .

In the first publications, Gert Selle worked on design and cultural-historical topics such as the ideology and utopia of design. On the social theory of industrial design (1973), Art Nouveau and the art industry. On the economy and aesthetics of the applied arts around 1900 (1974), The history of design in Germany from 1870 to today. Development of the industrial product culture (1978). The last one in particular has been published several times since then and is considered a standard work in design. Together with Michael Andritzky he wrote the study area living. Didactic non-fiction book from the nursery to the city (1979) and with the collaboration of Jutta Boehe culture of the senses and aesthetic education. Everyday life, socialization, art lessons in Germany from the German Empire to the Federal Republic (1981). Since his retirement, Gert Selle has been working more artistically, as an essayist and as a picture maker. In 2010 Gert Selle supported the knowledge platform designwissen.net.
