Life

Christian Bartenbach

Bartenbach grew up in a family with a technical background and attended the technical college in Innsbruck .

In 1954 he graduated as an engineer for electronics and electrical engineering . He then worked in the family business "GA Bartenbach, Innsbruck" and built up the lighting technology development department. In 1960, together with his brother Adolf Bartenbach, he founded the "Leuchtenfabrik Bartenbach Lichtsysteme GmbH", in which he owned 50 percent of the shares at the time. In addition to his work as the managing director at the time, he researched and developed artificial lighting systems.

The encounter with Ivo Kohler, the head of the Psychological Institute at the University of Innsbruck, prompted him to expand scientific research within the company's development department, integrating perceptual psychology into applied light research. Since 1964, Christian Bartenbach has devoted himself exclusively to applied light research and reduced his activities as managing director. He developed the dark-light technology (mirror grid technology), the first glare-free lighting.

In 1968 Christian Bartenbach founded the “Lichtplanung Christian Bartenbach” planning office in Munich, which deals exclusively with the medium of light in connection with the light-architectural design of indoor and outdoor spaces, and moved his residence from Innsbruck to Munich. In 1970 the research results developed in Austria were consolidated and in 1975 they were concentrated on the field of lighting for open-plan offices.

He developed the daylight deflection technology and several sun protection systems, for which patents have been granted in several countries. In 1989 Josef Lackner created the new parent company, the "Bartenbach LichtLabor" in Aldrans . There, in the so-called “artificial sky”, light situations are generated that can occur at any latitude or longitude in the world, precisely determined by the time of year and day.

Since 1994 Christian Bartenbach has primarily been concerned with the redirection of daylight in interior spaces, especially in offices. With Christian Berger he developed the Cine Reflect Lighting System . In 2003 he founded the Bartenbach Light Academy , which is also located in Aldrans. Since October 2013 the company "Bartenbach LichtLabor" founded by Christian Bartenbach has been trading under the name "Bartenbach GmbH" with its divisions: Bartenbach lighting design, Bartenbach research & development, Bartenbach lighting applications, Bartenbach lighting solutions.

The Bartenbach academy is the current name of the Bartenbach Light Academy.

On November 8, 2018, he was awarded the Austrian State Patent Prize for his life's work as an exceptional Austrian inventor.

Teaching

Bartenbach has been an honorary professor at the Technical University of Munich since 1983 . He has also taught at the University of Innsbruck and since 1985 at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich and since 1994 at the Technical University of Vienna .
