After the world championship in Leszno (2014) and three European championships , it was the fifth balloon sport event according to the FAI guidelines in which women competed for the title of the best hot air balloon pilot in the world and Europe.
The competition was held from July 5th to 10th, 2016. 41 balloonists from 19 countries around the world took part. The 2014 world champion entered the race with start number “1”. The medalists from Leszno Elisabeth Kindermann and Agnė Simonavičiūtė followed with the "2" and "2". One of the starting locations was the Pociūnai airfield. The morning of July 5th and July 10th were reserved for the general briefing, the opening event and the award ceremony in the Birštonas spa town. Due to the weather, only three of the nine planned trips could be carried out on five days of the competition. The fourth and last trip had to be canceled on July 9th due to an approaching weather front. The balloon fiesta with 16 balloons, however, could still be carried out successfully.
After the first run, the Russian Diana Nasonova was ahead of Scaife and Beata Choma from Poland. On the second run, Scaife took the lead from Choma and Ieva Šuopytė from the host country. Ewa Prawicka-Linke , the reigning European champion of 2015, could not make it into the medal ranks despite two wins in tasks one and five. On the third and final trip, Scaife extended their lead with a victory, Herdewyn won the last task and thus came second on the podium.
Elisabeth Kindermann from Austria came in seventh place, the Swiss Nicole Vogel in ninth and 24th. The German pilots Sylvia Meinl, Astrid Carl and Elise Kloss reached ranks 19, 20 and 27. The host Lithuanians Agnė Simonavičiūtė, Daiva Rakauskaitė, Ieva Šuopytė, Kristina Sūnaitienė, Miglė Vaitulevičiūtė and Rita Naujalienė came in fifth, sixth, ten, 22nd, 23rd and 32nd - Vogel, Kloss and Rakauskaitė also won the last race.
