Isomerism

3,4-Dimethoxycinnamic acid occurs in two isomeric forms, as ( E ) -3,4-dimethoxycinnamic acid and ( Z ) -3,4-dimethoxycinnamic acid.

Occurrence

The compound occurs naturally in unroasted coffee beans , although the proportion in Coffea robusta beans (0.433 g · kg ⁻¹ on average ) is higher than in those of Coffea arabica (0.059 g · kg ⁻¹ on average ).

presentation

The connection can be represented with the Doebner variant of the Knoevenagel reaction by reacting veratrumaldehyde with malonic acid .
