3-Methoxy-4-hydroxyphenylglycol ( MHPG , MOPEG ) is a metabolite of the metanephrines , which are the direct breakdown products of the catecholamines adrenaline and noradrenaline . In the brain, it is the primary metabolite of norepinephrine. It is released into the blood and liquor , so an increase may be a sign of previous activity of the sympathetic nervous system .

Low blood and cerebrospinal fluid levels are associated with anorexia nervosa .
