occupation

46/47 is a nearly nine-minute German short film by Nadine Heinze and Marc Dietschreit from 2011 that deals with Down's syndrome .

action

Daniel is a young man in his mid-twenties who is different. In the world in which he lives, he differs from all others in that he has one chromosome too few; everyone else has 47 chromosomes, Daniel only has 46. Therefore Daniel is considered disabled. He knows that he looks different from normal people. When shopping or on the bus, he is nervous and fearful because he has the feeling that everyone around him is constantly being stared at. A little boy asks him if he has found his chromosome in the meantime, to which Daniel replies that he already has 46, but he is still missing one thing. When the boy asks whether he remains disabled, Daniel runs away without a word.

Only his friend seems to understand his situation and develops a plan to help Daniel. While Daniel and his friend are playing “ Mensch ärgere dich nicht ”, Daniel moves away from the table for a moment because he takes a call from his mother. His friend takes the opportunity to swap the cassette in Daniel's Walkman for one with spoken words. When Daniel drives the bus on the other day and turns on his Walkman, he hears the title "Nice" , which says: I am good, I am right and special. I am valuable, unique. My eyes are beautiful, my hands are beautiful. I lead a meaningful life. I am one of them. I can shape my time. I am popular, I am beautiful, I am good, I am right and special. I am beautiful in my own way. Daniel smiles happily.

background

The screenwriters and directors Nadine Heinze and Marc Dietschreit attempt a change of perspective with the film 46/47 by depicting the world the other way around. The people with Down syndrome represent the part of the normal population, while Daniel is the outsider and has to struggle with the typical prejudices against people with disabilities. A targeted attempt is made to question the question of normality by reversing the perspective. The outwardly distinctive feature of Down's syndrome appears to be a suitable means of making differences between the groups visible. The film was shot in one day in Duisburg .
