500 - The Quiz arena was the German edition of the US quiz show 500 Questions to radio station ABC . It was broadcast by the private broadcaster RTL and moderated by Günther Jauch . The premiere broadcast was on July 4, 2016. From June 12, 2017, a second season with ten episodes was broadcast.

The questions for the show were created by mind the company GmbH (as with Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? ) , Patrick Linke acted as the intro spokesman . The show was recorded in the MMC Studios in Cologne-Ossendorf .

Game objective

The aim of the game is to correctly answer up to 500 general knowledge questions without predefined answer options or other help. The maximum prize is 2.5 million euros . These are made up of a maximum of possible € 500,000 by answering the five hundred questions and a jackpot of two million euros, whereby the 500th and therefore last question must be answered correctly for the jackpot .

procedure

First, a candidate selected by the editorial team is presented in a short film. In season 1, strengths and weaknesses were dealt with and additional information about the person's knowledge is conveyed. Since season 2, relatives and friends of the person have had their say and briefly describe them. This is followed by the introduction of another candidate who then takes the place of the “challenger”.

The candidate can now choose from ten predefined categories , each with three questions. After the moderator has read out the question from the selected field of knowledge, there is a time limit of five seconds. Within this time, the candidate must give the correct answer. It is relevant whether he gives the correct answer as the first term; because only then will he receive € 1,000 for the solution. If he gives the correct answer second or later, then the question is considered to have been answered correctly, but no money is added to the account. If the candidate does not manage to solve the question before the time runs out, he will receive a red cross . The correct answer to a following question neutralizes all crosses. If a candidate three red crosses, answered thus three consecutive questions correctly or not fast enough, he retires with his previously earned winnings from. The challenger now takes the place of the candidate and a new challenger is introduced according to the same scheme.

Usually the previous edition is briefly summarized in a film.

Rules of the game

season 1

The normal course of the game can be replaced by different, randomly occurring special rounds.

  • Duel - In a duel , the candidate must first decide who should start. Both players are now asked a question to which there are a certain number of correct possible answers. Alternately, both people now have five seconds to give a correct answer. If a player answers wrongly or not in time, he loses the duel. If it is the candidate, he receives a red cross; if it is the challenger, the question is considered to have been answered correctly and the candidate receives € 1,000. If all correct answers are given, the duel ends in a draw; however, is considered to have been won in the ranking for the candidate.
  • List - With a list , the candidate must first decide who should play it. The selected player is now asked a question to which several possible answers apply. Within 15 seconds the player has to give at least five correct answers to win the list. If the challenger succeeds, the candidate receives a red cross; If the challenger does not succeed or if the candidate succeeds, this question is answered correctly for him and he receives € 1,000.
  • Temporal round - Within fifty questions there are two temporal rounds with ten questions each on randomly determined categories. The candidate must answer these as well as normal questions within five seconds. However, the first answer applies here; subsequent correction is not possible. Here, too, he receives € 1,000 for a correct answer and a red cross for an incorrect answer.

There are also other rules:

  • The candidate cannot voluntarily leave the game at any time.
  • If the candidate has already received two red crosses, the challenger may choose the next category for the candidate. This regulation does not apply during a "temporary lap".
  • The challenger cannot be eliminated from the game at any time by incorrectly answering a question. Instead, he either moves up in due course for the candidate if he is eliminated from the game; or is eliminated because the candidate has passed the entire wall of fifty questions.
  • If there is any ambiguity in answering a question, the referee - who will be a millionaire? Winner Ralf Schnoor - can make a decision. In practice, this has rarely been the case so far.

Every fifty questions (regardless of whether they are answered correctly or incorrectly) the amount of money earned by the candidate is secured, provided that he has not previously been eliminated with three red crosses. If the challenger drops out prematurely, the amount earned by the candidate is also secured. If the candidate fails before question 50 and before the challenger, the game ends for him without a win.

Changes from season 2

With the start of the second season on June 12, 2017, some rules were changed.

  • The challenger can now also receive up to three crosses and can also neutralize them by answering a question (during a duel or a buzzer round). If he is eliminated with three red crosses, a new challenger will immediately follow suit. In addition, the money earned by the candidate up to that point is secured. The regulation with the profit levels no longer exists.
  • Instead of the “speed round” there is now a slightly modified “buzzer round”. The rules are similar to those of the duel. However, the opponents buzz about the right to answer in ten questions in a row. If the chosen person answers the question incorrectly, he receives a red cross. If the challenger answers the question correctly, the candidate receives a red cross; if the candidate answers the question correctly, he will receive € 1,000. If none of the opponents buzzes, the question can be rated as a draw. The first buzzer round takes place halfway through the wall played, the second is played at the end of the wall of questions.
  • In the game mode "Duel" the candidate must now begin. The "List" game mode no longer exists.
  • If a duel is answered correctly, all red crosses are deleted for both the candidate and the challenger.
  • When the candidate has received two red crosses, the challenger is no longer allowed to choose the category of the next question.
  • If it is already clear after fewer than 50 questions that the candidate can no longer be replaced by a challenger, the remaining questions on the wall are no longer asked. The goal "500" is therefore no longer synonymous with surviving ten game walls.
  • On every question wall there is now the category "chance" in which questions from all areas of knowledge are asked.

Trivia

  • Since the beginning of the broadcast, 31 participants (13 candidates and 18 challengers) have dropped out of the previous 15 episodes without any profit.
  • So far, prizes totaling € 469,000 have been paid out, of which € 261,000 to three winners in the first season and € 208,000 to seven winners in season 2.
  • The 30-year-old Michael Marji holds the previous record with 196 answered questions and a total profit of 118,000 €. He was eliminated in the third episode.
  • In the second broadcast on July 11, 2016, there was something unique. The candidate answered question 120 just short of time, but the answer was deemed incorrect. The referee answered the question correctly and € 1,000 was added to the account. The candidate noticed that it was not the first answer and got the money withdrawn; also that the question was still marked as "wrong" on the video wall.
  • The second season started with a new candidate and a new challenger. The last challenger of the first season was not included.

Reviews

The reviews of the premiere broadcast were mostly negative. The tenacity of the actually fast game principle and the complex set of rules were particularly criticized .

"The time pressure when answering and the renouncement of multiple choice as well as saving jokers only allowed a fairly manageable level of questions [...]. You wait in vain for variations in the level of difficulty. [...] The new game mode robbed Günther Jauch of his greatest strength. The banter and maneuvering with his candidates, his obligatory dachshund look, his raised corners of his mouth, his facial expression perfected in over 1300 episodes [Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?], There was almost no room for all of that in the 'Quiz Arena'. "

- Christian Düringer : welt.de

"A complicated set of rules, bland slogans from the host and annoying shows - RTL's five-part TV experiment seems immature and exhausting at the same time, despite the likeable candidates."

- Marcel Romahn : rp-online.de

"[...] '500 - The Quiz Arena' is certainly not a complete failure - but the show doesn't really knock you off your feet."
