74P / Smirnova-Chernykh is a periodic comet in our solar system . He was discovered at the end of March 1975 by Tamara Michailowna Smirnowa and Nikolai Stepanowitsch Tschernych at the Crimean Observatory . In images of its discovery, the comet had an apparent magnitude of around 15. In the year of its discovery, the comet reached its perihelion on August 6, 1975 .
The comet was photographed in 1967 but was identified as an asteroid and given the 1967 EU designation.
The comet is estimated to be about 4.46 km in diameter, and currently has an orbit entirely within the orbit of Jupiter .
