The comet 7P / Pons-Winnecke was discovered on June 12, 1819 by Jean-Louis Pons at the Marseille Observatory. The astronomer Friedrich August Theodor Winnecke , who worked in Bonn, rediscovered him on March 9, 1858. The comet, which belongs to the Jupiter family, has an orbital period of around 6.4 years and passed its perihelion for the last time on January 30, 2015.
In 1927, the comet approached less than 6 million km from Earth, the attempt to optically measure the size of the nucleus failed because the method was resolved, but resulted in an upper limit of 5 km. Using the NTT of ESO succeeded km detect it early 21st century, the Radius to 2.24 ± 0.02.
7P / Pons-Winnecke is the mother body of the meteor shower of the June Bootids from June 22nd to July 2nd (maximum June 28th).
