7 Poets Trio is a jazz album by Tomas Fujiwara . The recordings, taken on October 4, 2018 in the studio The Bunker, Brooklyn, were released on RogueArt in September 2019 .

background

The 7 Poets Trio is a collaboration between Patricia Brennan (vibraphone), Tomeka Reid (cello) and Tomas Fujiwara (drums), three members of the avant-garde jazz scene in New York City. All of the compositions on the album, with the exception of “Questions” (which Fujiwara had composed ten years earlier), were written by Fujiwara exclusively for this trio with Reid and Brennan. In the liner notes he noted:

“As I was composing, I had the sound [of the music] and the personality of these two friends in mind, and imagined a variety of sound possibilities for the unique instrumentation of the vibraphone, cello, and drums. As I wrote, I added soundtracks to the images in my head, the stories of my life, both real and imaginary. "

Tomas Fujiwara gathered his 7 Poets Trio for the first time during his residence at The Stone in New York in April 2018, having previously played with Patricia Brennan in Michael Formanek's Ensemble Kolossus and with Tomeka Reid in their quartet. As with previous ensembles of his (Tomas Fujiwara & The Hook Up, The Tomas Fujiwara Trio and Triple Double), Fujiwara brought together two musicians who had never played together before, creating a new combination of musical personalities. Her live debut was described in All About Jazz as "a mixture of chamber jazz, modern classical composition and improvisation".

reception

According to Brian Kiwanuka, who reviewed the album for Nextbop , the 7 Poets Trio was consistently top notch. Although the music is composed here, each member is given enough space for adventure, and every excursion reveals a deep understanding between them. Though previous recordings like the whopping Triple Double will always make fans pause for thought when they rate Fujiwara's discography as a band leader, 7 Poets Trio could be his best work yet.

The New Music USA reviewer wrote that the six pieces aimed to strike a balance between composition and improvisation, to offer each musician a range of roles (musical foreground and background, solo and supportive, melodic and percussive), and most importantly, an environment for creating a real collaborative ensemble sound. Tomas Fujiwara's 7 Poets Trio is a continuation of several of Fujiwara's musical interests, including the flexible roles and multiple possibilities of a particular instrument, as well as the sounds of multi-percussion ensembles to which he belonged, such as Living By Lanterns, No Moto and the Taylor Ho Bynum 7-tette.
