The HSBC Tower is a skyscraper in London . It forms part of the Canary Wharf complex in Docklands . The building at 8 Canada Square is the international headquarters of HSBC . It was designed by Sir Norman Foster and his architectural office.

With a height of 200 meters and 45 floors, it is one of the tallest buildings in Great Britain, together with the Citigroup Center of the same height , only surpassed by One Canada Square and The Shard as of 2012 . The first three buildings mentioned are in close proximity to each other. The HSBC Tower is not accessible to the general public: there is a smaller shopping center in the basement.

Construction began in January 1999 and was completed in March 2001. In May 2000, a construction crane fell from the roof, killing three construction workers. The cause of the accident could never be determined. A small memorial on the forecourt commemorates this accident. The building was officially inaugurated by Sir John Bond on April 2, 2003 .

In 2008 HSBC bought back the headquarters it had sold to the Spanish company Metrovacesa SA. In 2009 the building was sold by HSBC to the National Pension Service of Korea as part of a sale-lease-back .
