description
The construction, based on a design by the eminent Scottish architect Charles Wilson , was completed in 1853. The three-story building is near the west end of Sauchiehall Street at the junction with Kelvingrove Street between the Park District and the Clyde . It is designed in a classical style.
The main facade along Sauchiehall Street is seven axes wide. The central main entrance consists of two wooden portals which are integrated into a three-axis wide portico with Corinthian columns. The motif is taken up again as a pilaster between the doors . The portico closes as a balcony with a stone balustrade . Simple Doric pilasters with sculptured heads surround the windows on the ground floor. Cornices suspend the windows on the upper floors . A string courses with dentil separates the ground horizontally from the first floor. Plain window cornices run along both upper floors . A floral frieze runs below the final cornice . A stone balustrade sits on it. The six-axis-wide facade along Kelvingrove Street is designed analogously. The building closes with a slate half - hipped roof .
