AP Venkateswaran ( Ayilam Panchapakesa Venkateswaran Ayyar ; born August 2, 1930 in Brahmapur , Orissa , † September 2, 2014 in Bangalore ) was an Indian diplomat.

Life

Venkateswaran was the son of Vedanayaki Ammal and AS Panchapakesa Ayyar (1899–1963). He attended Madras Christian College. He married Usha, they have a daughter. Venkateswaran is a Master of Science, Master in Economics and Master in Political Science . He joined the foreign service on April 2, 1952. From 1952 to 1953 he studied international law at Oxford. From 1953 to 1954 he studied at the UCL School of Slavonic and East European Studies in London. From 1955 to 1957 he was employed in the legation in Prague . From 1957 to 1959 he was consul in New York. From 1959 to 1962 he was first class delegation secretary in Addis Ababa . From 1962 to 1964 he was Deputy Secretary of External affairs Government of India (Deputy Secretary of State in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs). From 1964 to 1967 he was first class delegation secretary and second class counselor in Moscow . From 1967 to 1969 he was Minister Counselor in Bonn . From 1969 to 1971 he was High Commissioner (Commonwealth) in Suva . From 1974 to 1975 he was a Fellow of the Center for Industrial Affairs at Harvard University . From August 1975 to 1977 he was ambassador to Washington, DC From 1975 to 1977 he was ambassador to Damascus . From May 1980 to August 1982 he represented the Indian government at the United Nations Office in Geneva . From October 5, 1982 he was ambassador to Beijing . From April 1, 1986 to January 20, 1987, he was State Secretary in the Foreign Ministry. Rajiv Gandhi exposed him at a press conference and immediately released him.
