The 1982/83 season was the second regular season of the Atlantic Coast Hockey League . During the regular season, the six teams were to play 64 games each, but the schedule had to be revised due to the premature, financially-related, exit of the Hampton Roads Gulls . In the play-offs, the Carolina Thunderbirds prevailed and won the Bob Payne Trophy for the first time in their club's history .

Team changes

The following changes were made before the start of the season:

• The Baltimore Skipjacks merged with the Erie Blades and moved to the American Hockey League .
• The Erie Golden Blades were added to the league as an expansion team.
• The Hampton Roads Gulls were added to the league as an expansion team.
• The Nashville South Stars from the Central Hockey League were added to the league as an expansion team.
• The Winston-Salem Thunderbirds changed their name to Carolina Thunderbirds.
• The Salem Raiders changed their name to Virginia Raiders.
