history

The groundbreaking ceremony for the 13-storey high -rise planned by Kurt Hlaweniczka took place in 1968. As an international press center , it provided TV offices and other office space for 15 agencies . Its name refers to the Austria Press Agency , APA for short, which had its signature on the roof. The Kronen Zeitung had its company headquarters in the immediate vicinity . In the 1980s, after the falling out between Krone partners Hans Dichand and Kurt Falk , parts of the Krone that did not belong to Dichand and Falk together were also housed in the APA high-rise. Falk had a neon sign for the Falk cigarette brand installed on the roof of the press center - and in the field of view of Dichand's office - at his own expense . Today the lettering of the daily newspaper Kurier is affixed to the house in glowing letters.

Too few parking spaces and the lack of connection to the light rail line passing right next door were criticized . The building is considered to be contaminated with asbestos . In August 2005, APA moved out of the building, which also moved other tenants to move out. The building has been empty since then.

The building originally belonged to the Bundesländer Versicherung , which later became part of the Uniqa Insurance Group . At the end of 2012, the architect Heinz Neumann bought the building from Uniqa for 8.2 million euros. Since the owners of the surrounding land could not agree, a planned revitalization remained unrealized. In 2018 Neumann sold the property on to Bai Bauträger Immobilien , a Signa Holding company .

In January 2020 it was reported that Signa plans to demolish the building.
