The ARO 240 on a 55 Bani definitive stamp (1975)

ARO (Auto România) was a state car manufacturer in Romania . The plant was located on an area of about 46 hectares ( location ) on European route 574 in the north of the city of Câmpulung in the Argeș district .

history

With the model "IMS 57", an abbreviation named after the state enterprise I ntereprinderea M etalurgică de S tat and the year of the start of production (1957), the production of the ARO off-road vehicles began. The vehicle was a further development of the Soviet GAZ-69 off-road vehicle . From 1957 to 1959 about 1500 vehicles were completed. The model IMS 57 had a weight of 1615 kg (650 kg load), and was supported by a 50 hp (at 2800 min -1 driven), 3.26-liter, four-cylinder gasoline engine. The average consumption of the IMS 57 was 24 liters per 100 km; the maximum speed at 80 km / h.

1961 began with the project of the type "M 461", which was produced in 1964 in series. In 1965, ARO succeeded in selling 53,000 vehicles in 55 countries on the international market with this model.

The range of the ARO brand included only off-road vehicles . Until about 1981 these vehicles could only be bought by a few private individuals in Romania, most of them were acquired by the Romanian military. Even after 1981, private individuals could only purchase these vehicles at almost three times the regular price with the approval of the Ministry of Economic Affairs or Ceaușescus . Because of the bad business situation of the former Romanian financial institution Bancorex , the company got into financial difficulties in the 1990s.

However, several attempts to privatize the company were rejected by the Romanian government. In September 2003, the company was awarded with the approval of the APAPS (Autoritatea pentru Privatizare și Administrarea Proprietății Statului, in German: Authority for Privatization and Administration of State Property ) to John Perez, chairman of an alleged car company Cross Lander in the USA. At the time, the Cross Lander did not yet exist in the USA. In Brazil, Perez built a new plant in which the imported CKD assemblies from Romania were equipped with local motors. In 2004, Perez sold parts of the ARO plants with permission from the Privatization and State Property Management Agency .

On June 15, 2006, the ARO plant filed for bankruptcy, after which the property was gradually sold to various companies.

In a conversation with the head of AVAS (Autoritatea pentru Valorificarea Activelor Statului; in English, Authority for the Exploitation of State Assets ), Perez accused the Senators at the time, Nicolae Văcăroiu and Constantin Nicolescu , of preventing a replacement of the management, which had vehicles under value for eight months - to Poland (2300 €) and the Czech Republic (2000 €) - with the participation of the two senators.
