The AS "Wal" ( special automatic rifle "Welle" , Russian Автомат Специальный "Вал" , GRAU index 6P30) is an assault rifle developed in the Soviet Union with an integrated silencer . It was developed in the late 1980s and is used by the Spetsnaz , MWD , FSB and selected units of the Russian Army .
Details
Since operations by special forces often require a covert approach, the 9 × 39 mm medium cartridge was developed for the Speznas . Due to the weight and size of the bullet, it flies at subsonic speed , which means that only the muzzle bang occurs , but no sonic boom. A family of subsonic muted weapons was created for this cartridge: the AS Wal assault rifle and the Wintores sniper rifle . In 1987 AS Wal was added to the arsenals of the Soviet Army and the KGB .
The AS whale has an effective range of around 300 meters. This range, which is quite long for silenced weapons, is achieved by the special ammunition. The same 10- or 20-round magazines from the WSS Wintores and the 30-round magazine from the SR-3M can also be used. The controls with a rechargeable handle on the right-hand side, tangential visor, magazine release behind the magazine well and safety lever above the trigger guard are similar to those of weapons designed according to the Kalashnikov principle. However, the fire switch is located inside the trigger guard behind the trigger.
70% of the AS Wal components are identical to the Wintores sniper rifle. The differences are in the skeletonized steel shaft that can be folded to the left (the weapon can be operated with the shaft folded, but it cannot be equipped with a scope while the shaft is folded).
The weapon has an integrated silencer which can be dismantled for maintenance purposes. The weapon housing is made of forged steel, only the fore-end and the pistol grip are made of plastic. The foldable shoulder rest is designed as a steel tube construction. As with the Kalashnikov, the gas system works with a gas linkage fixed to the bolt carrier, the rotating head bolt locks with six lugs. The trigger mechanism is similar to that of the Samopal vz. 58 and is hammerless, the firing pin is operated directly.
The weapon cannot carry a bayonet or an underflow grenade launcher. It was therefore supplemented from 1990 by the OZ-14 Grosa , which has a longer barrel thanks to its compact bullpup design and can also use an add-on grenade launcher.
