ATA Airlines , American Trans Air until 2003 , was an American airline based in Indianapolis , which ceased all activities on April 2, 2008.

history

The Ambassadair Travel Club was founded in 1972 and began flight operations with a Boeing 720 . American Trans Air was founded as a charter airline in 1973. It was not until 1981 that it received the line license and purchased the Boeing 707 . Indianapolis initially served as the central hub. Initially, however, only charter flights continued. In 1985, several Lockheed L-1011 "TriStar" were added to the fleet. During the Gulf War of 1991, 108,000 US soldiers were transported to the Persian Gulf as part of Operation Desert Storm . The first scheduled flight was offered in 1992. In 2003 the company name was changed to "ATA Airline Inc.". Furthermore, North American Airlines carried out troop flights on behalf of the United States Department of Defense . In October 2004, the parent company, ATA Holdings Corp., filed for bankruptcy protection under US law (" Chapter 11 "). After Matlin Patterson and other lenders invested $ 100 million to buy ATA Holdings, ATA Airlines was privatized. For this reason ATA was able to end the bankruptcy protection on February 28, 2006.

On April 5, 2007, the parent company ATA Holdings (now Global Aero Logistics) bought the North American airlines North American Airlines and World Airways from World Air Holdings.

On April 2, 2008, bankruptcy protection under US law (“Chapter 11”) was again applied for and as a result, flight operations were completely suspended. The company attributed this development to the loss of an important contract in the military charter business.
