The Radeon X1000 series is a series of desktop graphics chips from AMD (formerly ATI Technologies ) and the successor to the ATI Radeon X series . It is the fifth generation of graphics processors with the name ATI Radeon . It was replaced by the Radeon HD 2000 series .

Graphics processors

Quads

The graphics chips used consist of so-called "quads". This mainly indicates the number of rendering pipelines used and the associated pixel shaders, but the number of VPUs also depends on it. Only the number of rendering pipelines per quad within the Radeon X1 series of four can be precisely determined; there have been developments in the number of other units. Graphics processors with a code number of 520 and smaller tend to have fewer pixel shaders per quad (only four), while processors with higher code numbers tend to have twelve. In contrast, the number of VPUs has decreased with newer versions.

RV515

Different graphics processors are used within the Radeon X1 series, which differ in terms of production technology and 3D capabilities. With the exception of the RV370, all graphics processors can handle pixel shaders 3.0 and DirectX 9.0c.

Naming

All graphics chips are identified with a five-digit combination of letters and numbers, which generally begins with an "X1" (for Radeon X1000 series). The second digit then divides the family into different market segments. The third and fourth digits serve for further diversification. These models are further divided into different variants. These are marked with a corresponding abbreviation after the model number, which leads to a very large variety of model names.

Division :

  • X10xx / X13xx / X15xx: Low-Cost
  • X16xx: mainstream
  • X18xx / X19xx: high-end

Letter abbreviation :

  • GT  - budget version of a chip with disabled quads
  • [no suffix]  - "Standard" version, the weakest model in the low-end segment
  • Pro  - budget version of a chip, stronger than the “standard” version
  • GTO  - chip in the high-end segment, a quad disabled, more powerful Pro version
  • XL  - more powerful chip in the high-end segment, all quads are activated, less powerful XT version
  • XT  - More powerful chip in all segments, all quads are activated
  • XTX  - The most powerful single-core chip in the high-end segment
  • Pro Dual  - model with two graphics chips on one card (only in the high-end segment)

Other abbreviations such as "RX", "GTO 2 ", "XXL", "Ultimate", "IceQ", "Silentpipe" or "Performance Edition" are not official names from AMD (formerly ATI), but marketing names of individual graphics card manufacturers with which special properties should be pointed out.

Notes :

  • The stated clock rates are those recommended or specified by AMD. However, the final specification of the clock rates is in the hands of the respective graphics card manufacturer. It is therefore entirely possible that there are or will be graphics card models that have different clock rates.
  • It is also up to the manufacturers whether the final graphics card has a PCIe or an AGP connection, because GPUs with a native PCIe interface can also be used for AGP graphics cards with the help of a bridge chip.

Folding @ home

Graphics processors of the ATI-Radeon-X1600, X1800 and X1900 series could also be used for computing tasks of the Folding @ home project and exceeded the performance of current x86 processors many times over. At the beginning of June 2008 this DirectX -based client was discontinued; the current version now uses the CAL interface, which means that support for the ATI Radeon X1 series was no longer available, whereas the HD-2000 , HD-3000 and HD-4000 series are supported.

ATI-Radeon-X1000 as IGP

Two integrated graphics units , which AMD uses in its own chipsets, are marketed under the names ATI Radeon Xpress X1200 and ATI Radeon Xpress X1250 and are based on the ATI Radeon X700 .
