The Aachener Tierpark Euregiozoo (formerly Aachener Tierpark ) is an 8.9 hectare zoo between the districts of Forst and Beverau in the Aachen “Drimborner Wäldchen”, which is named after the former family of the mayors of lay judges Hermann von Dremborn and Johann von Drimborn . The entrance is on Obere Drimbornstrasse.

It is traversed by the Beverbach , which in the northwestern part of the park is dammed to form a lake of around 2 hectares. In 2007 the zoo was accepted into the Association of Zoological Gardens , which only includes scientifically managed zoos with strict species protection guidelines and breeding programs.

history

The first zoo in Aachen was the Aachen Zoological Garden , which was laid out in Lochnergarten in 1885 on the site of today's Aachen West Park . This zoo was home to around 50 giant snakes , bears and tigers, as well as numerous native species. In 1905 the park was temporarily closed because the feed and transport costs for the animals in the zoological garden were underestimated.

In 1935 an animal park was reopened at the old location. In the years before and during the Second World War between 1935 and 1944, it was called the Tier- und Pflanzengarten Aachen . Most of the animals were killed in a bomb attack in 1944. The rest of the animal population was sold to Ulm. After the end of the Second World War, all existing buildings in Westpark were demolished. From the time of the zoo, only a pond at the exit to Lochnerstrasse has survived until today .

In 1966 a new zoo was set up in the Drimborner Woods , which initially only had a small area, but which has grown steadily over the last few decades. Several parts of the landscape protection area could be included in the Euregiozoo. At the beginning, an excursion restaurant was adjacent to the zoo. A daycare center has been located here since summer 2014 .

In 2004 Greenpeace listed the zoo among the 22 best zoos in Germany, Switzerland and Austria.

There are around 700 animals from 100 species in the zoo. Particularly rich in native animals, the park also offers monkeys , Asian camels , zebras , Watussi cattle , lynxes , servals , cheetahs , antelopes , African ostriches and exotic birds. 70 species of water fowl populate a 2 hectare lake and smaller ponds. In the park there is a Roman sarcophagus that was found in 1793 at the Palant house in Weisweiler , as well as numerous sculptures by various regional and national artists.

Traffic connection

The next motorway junction is Aachen-Brand on the A 44 .

Parking spaces are available in front of the entrance. Additional parking spaces can be found along the outer ring on Adenauerallee, which can also be reached without an environmental zone sticker .

The next train station is Aachen-Rothe Erde , the NRW-Express , Rhein-Sieg-Express and the Euregiobahn stop here . From the train station it is a 15-minute walk to the zoo.

The zoo can also be reached by public transport . ASEAG line 16 goes directly to the zoo, other lines with high frequency to the Zeppelinstraße stop. From there it is a ten-minute walk to the zoo.
