Abşeron ( Azerbaijani Abşeron , from the Persian place of salt water ), Russian Апшерон Apscheron , is a 60 km long peninsula on the Caspian Sea .
Baku , the capital of Azerbaijan , and parts of the Abşeron Rayon are located on the peninsula .
The peninsula is a well known oil production area. Industrial oil production began here in 1870. Apscheron is also rich in salt lakes , mineral springs and mud volcanoes . An unusual sight is the natural gas fire on Yanardag .
From August 1 to September 15, 1918, the Central Aspic dictatorship existed on the peninsula , a state supported by Great Britain .
