Abdel Khaliq Hassuna

Muhammad Abdel Khaliq Hassuna ( Arabic محمد عبد الخالق حسونة, DMG Muḥammad ʿAbd al-Ḫāliq Ḥassūna ; * October 28, 1898 in Cairo ; † January 20, 1992 ibid) was an Egyptian politician .

Life

Hassuna entered the diplomatic service of the Kingdom of Egypt and spent most of his early career in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in various posts until he finally became Secretary of State in 1939. In 1942 he was appointed governor of Alexandria . In 1949 he was appointed Minister of Social Affairs and then in 1952 Foreign Minister.

After the military coup of July 23, 1952 and the overthrow of King Faruq , he became general secretary of the Arab League in September 1952 . In the following years he proved to be a convincing and recognized negotiator between the Arab states within the League and outside the region, especially during the Suez Crisis , after President Gamal Abdel Nasser declared the nationalization of the Suez Canal in 1956. In 1961 he coordinated the formation of the League's own armed forces in order to protect Kuwait , which had previously become independent, against an invasion by Iraq .

When Hassuna resigned on June 1, 1972 after a twenty-year term in office, the former Egyptian Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Mahmoud Riyadh succeeded him as Secretary General of the Arab League.

The French Order of the Legion of Honor was one of Hassuna's numerous awards .
