Mahmoud Riad (also: Mahmud Riyyad ; Arabic محمود رياض, DMG Maḥmūd Riyāḍ ; * January 8, 1917 in Al-Qalyubiyya ; † January 25, 1992 in Cairo ) was an Egyptian politician and diplomat .

Life

After participating in the Palestine War from 1948 to 1949, he was a member of the Egyptian delegation to the armistice negotiations with Israel in 1949. After the military coup of July 23, 1952 and the overthrow of the monarchy , he joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where he was initially head of department for Palestine . He was then director for Arab affairs from 1953 to 1955 and then ambassador to Syria until 1958 . Upon his return he became special advisor to President Gamal Abdel Nasser . In 1962 he was appointed permanent representative to the United Nations in New York .

Thereafter, Riyadh was Foreign Minister from 1964 to 1972 and also Deputy Prime Minister in the government of Mahmud Fauzi between 1971 and 1972 . In these functions he sought a broader international front against Israel, which was boycotted by the Arab League . In the run-up to the Six Day War , Riyadh concealed Egypt's preparations for war against UN officials.

On June 1, 1972, he succeeded his compatriot Abdel Khaliq Hassuna as General Secretary of the Arab League .

He was opposed to President Anwar al-Sadat's peace initiative with Israel and warned against what he saw as a one-sided step that was causing a rift in the Arab world. Nevertheless, the peace treaty was signed in March 1979 . Because other Arab states voted to exclude Egypt from the league and move the headquarters of the organization from Cairo to Tunis for this reason , Riyadh resigned from the post of general secretary. Subsequently, however, he remained an advisor to the governments of Presidents al-Sadat and Hosni Mubarak .
