Abdinghof blood blessing

The so-called Abdinghofer Blutsegen ( Ad restringendum sanguinem ) is a late Old High German spell belonging to the Longinus blessings from the first half to the middle of the 12th century. The document is named after the place where it was found / written in the former Abdinghof Abbey near Paderborn .

The saying is added in prose form at the end of a Latin Aderlas tract in the Rhenish Franconian dialect. In terms of type, the saying belongs to the Longinus blessings , that is, in the function of breastfeeding a bleeding wound. In the Middle Ages, this variety was based on the New Testament passage from the Passion of Christ and its wounded on the cross by the lance of blind Roman legionary Longinus , who had received his sight by the blood of Jesus as a model for action for the evocation of a hemostasis used. In this respect, the saying shows parallels to the Latin-Old High German (Alemannic) Longinussegen in the Zurich manuscript HS. Rh. 51, 23r from the 10th century and finds further echoes in the German Blutsegen such as the Bamberg Blutsegen , the Strasbourg Blutsegen and the Trier Blutsegen .

The Abdinghofer Blutsegen is today in the manuscript MS M.863, 5 v of the Morgan Library & Museum in New York .
