The Abemama airfield , officially English. : Abemama Atoll Airport , often only Abemama Airport ( IATA code : ABF, ICAO code : N OT), is a national airport Kiribati and is located on the northern tip of the central Gilbert Islands belonging Atoll Abemama , around 200 meters from the village Tabiang away . Abemama is about 150 km southeast of the capital atoll Tarawa just north of the equator .

history

The airfield was originally built for the American Air Force in late 1943 after being liberated from the Japanese occupation by the United States Navy SeaBees . He was an important part of the Pacific War for the attacks on the Marshall Islands , Kwajalein and Eniwetok in 1944 . After the Second World War, it passed into the hands of the British colonial administration of the Gilbert and Ellic Islands , since independence in 1979 it has belonged to the state of Kiribati and gained increasing importance as a tourist destination.

Air Kiribati is the only scheduled airline to fly to the airport from its hub at Bonriki International Airport in South Tarawa .
