Aberavon (constituency, UK)
Coordinates: 51 ° 36 ′ N , 3 ° 49 ′ W Aberavon ( Welsh : Aberafan ) is a constituency for elections to the House of Commons of the British Parliament . (Not to be confused with the constituency of the same name for the Welsh Parliament )
The constituency is in South Wales, on the right bank of the River Afan , near its confluence with Swansea Bay .
history
The constituency was formed on the occasion of the 1918 general election and the division of the Swansea District constituency. Except for the first election, the constituency always went to the Labor Party . Ramsay MacDonald , who became Labor Prime Minister in 1924 , held the mandate from 1922 to 1929. Current MP Stephen Kinnock is the son of Neil Kinnock , who was Labor Party leader and opposition leader from 1983 to 1992.
Aberavon is the safest constituency for Labor anywhere; since the end of the Second World War, the Labor candidate has won the mandate with at least 33% of the vote and, with the exception of 2015 , the Labor candidate obtained an absolute majority of the votes cast. In 2015, Kinnock received only 48.9% of the votes cast in Aberavon, but 50.4% in the 2017 election.
