Hywel Francis

David Hywel Francis (born June 6, 1946 in Neath , Glamorgan , Wales ) is a Welsh Labor Party politician . From 2001 to 2015 he was a member of the House of Commons .

Family, education and professional career

Francis was born to the union activist Dai Francis . He received his education at Whitchurch Grammar School and Llangatwg Secondary School. This was followed by studies at Swansea University . Here Francis received his doctorate in history . He later received a call to a professorship for adult education at his alma mater . He held this position until his election to the House of Commons. During his time as a professor he was instrumental in building the South Wales Miners' Library .

Political career

Like his father, Francis was initially a member of the British Communist Party . From 1999 to 2000 he was an advisor to Paul Murphy , who was Minister for Wales at that time . In the British general election in 2001 he was elected to parliament for the constituency of Aberavon . He prevailed over his competitor from the Plaid Cymru party with a lead of over 50% . In the 2005 and 2010 elections , Francis was able to defend his seat with a similar margin. In July 2005, he chaired the Welsh Affairs Select Committee , a committee of the House of Commons responsible for overseeing the Wales Office and maintaining relations with the National Assembly for Wales . He was a member of this until 2010. In the same year he took over the chairmanship of the Human Rights Committee . He has also been a member of the Liaison Committee since 2005 . On November 22, 2013, Francis announced that he would no longer run in the 2015 elections. The Labor Party then nominated Stephen Kinnock as a candidate for the seat on March 22, 2014. Kinnock replaced Francis as MP for the Aberavon constituency on May 7, 2015.

Memberships and honors

Francis has been a member of a Gorsedd since 1986 . He is Vice President of Carers UK , an association that supports carers in the UK. He is also an honorary member of the National Institute of Adult Continuing Education . Francis is President of the South Wales Miners' Museum in Port Talbot . He is also involved in several foundations .
