Abinadab is the name of four men in the Old Testament .

etymology

The Hebrew personal name אֲבִינָדָב 'ǎvînādāv , German ' Abinadab ' , is a verb sentence name, consisting of subject and predicate. The subject is the noun אֲב 'ǎv "father", which is also the theophoric element , predicate is a state verb of the root נדב ndv "be generous / give freely / donate". The verb is used here as an adjective that is supposed to characterize the "father" and is therefore best translated as "noble". Hebrew, as found in personal names, preserves an older language level than Bible Hebrew. This is expressed in the fact that the -î- which is attached to the first noun is probably not an ending of the 1st person singular (“my father”), but a functionless connecting vowel and possibly the remnant of a old case ending. Thus the name means "father is noble". The designation of God as Father is intended here to express his relationship with people.

Personal names such as Amminadab (עַמִּינָדָב 'ammînādāv "father-brother is noble"), Ahinadab (אֲחִינָדָב ' ǎḥînādāv "brother is noble"), Nadab (נָדָב nādāv "(God) is noble"), as well as Nedabja and Jonadab (avdavj ה nadab , דַבְ davj ה) can be compared יֹונָדָב jônādāv , יְהֹונָדָב jəhônādāv , all " YHWH is noble"). Comparable names are also recorded in other Semitic languages.

The Septuagint almost always gives the name in the same way as the name Amminadab as Αμιναδαβ Aminadab , only in 1 Kings 4:11  LXX as Χιναναδαβ Chinanadab , the Vulgate as Abinadab , only in 1 Kings 4:11 as Benabinadab .
