Abraham Dürninger (born December 22, 1706 in Strasbourg ; † February 13, 1773 in Herrnhut ) was a German merchant, deacon and brother of Herrnhut .

Life

Abraham Dürninger was born the second of nine children to the businessman and Strasbourg councilor Jakob Dürninger and his wife Susanna Katharina. In his father's business and in trading houses in Basel , Amsterdam , Alicante and Nancy, he learned the trade. After his return he was appointed to the syndic of an iron forge, so that, in addition to his commercial knowledge, he also gained an insight into production processes.

In 1741 Dürninger, who was deeply religious and was looking for a religious "home", met some brothers of the Moravian Church in Strasbourg who impressed him. In July 1743 he traveled to Herrnhaag in the Wetterau to get to know the way of life and beliefs of the Brethren there. In December 1744 he joined the congregation. In the following years he worked in the administration of the Herrnhaager Brothers Congregation and above all as "accounting officer" (bookkeeper) of the theological seminar of the Moravian Brothers Church, which had recently been set up in Lindheim Castle . On September 18, 1747, he married the widow Anna Christina Obermüller (1715–1792), née Frantz, who had been drawn as his wife.

After the wedding, Abraham Dürninger and his wife were sent to Herrnhut . Because there he should take over the management of the small shop of the local fraternity. Thanks to his drive and his knowledge, he turned the modest community shop into the important trading company Abraham Dürninger & Co , based in Herrnhut, which was already successfully active in international trade in the 18th century.
