Abraham Munting (born June 19, 1626 in Groningen ; † January 31, 1683 ibid) was a Dutch botanist .

Live and act

Abraham Munting is the son of Hendrik Munting (1583–1658). He attended Latin school and enrolled on January 15, 1645 to study at the University of Groningen . Under Martin Schook , Munting graduated there with the work of De Turff, sive de crespitibus bituminosis . Since his father insisted that he should one day take over the plant garden he had created and which is known throughout Europe, Munting continued his studies. He attended the universities of Franeker , Utrecht and Leiden , went to France in 1649 and received his doctorate in Angers . In 1651 Munting returned to Groningen. After the death of his father in 1658, he took over the management of the Botanical Gardens of Groningen and became professor of botany at the city's university.

In 1672 Munting published the work Waare Oeffening der Planten with 40 engravings , which was followed by a second edition in 1682. The successful work was published in a third edition in 1696, now with 245 illustrations, and translated into Latin by Franz Kiggelaer in 1702 .

After his death, his son Albert Munting took over the management of the Botanical Gardens in Groningen in 1683.

Honor taxon

Charles Plumier named the genus Muntingia of the Muntingiaceae plant family in his honor . Carl von Linné later took over this name.
