Abraham Stavsky ( Hebrew אברהם סטבסקי; * January 5, 1906 in Brest , Russian Empire (today Belarus ); † June 22, 1948 in Tel Aviv ) was an active member of Betar , the youth movement of the Revisionist Zionists founded by Vladimir Jabotinsky .

Life

Those accused of the murder of Arlosoroff: Abraham Stavsky, left, Zvi Rosenblatt , right, immediately after their release from prison, on the table the portrait of Horace Samuel, their lawyer. Behind them: Sonia Ahimeir, wife of Abba Ahimeir , the third defendant.

On June 18, 1933, Stavsky was arrested by the British police from the League of Nations Palestine . He was suspected of murdering Chaim Arlosoroff on June 16, 1933 . On June 8, 1934, he was sentenced to death. There was, however, great disagreement among the public over the charges and the verdict. The Ashkenazi chief rabbi of Palestine, Abraham Isaak Kook , supported the judgment. The death sentence was overturned by the Supreme Court of Appeals .

He continued his work with the Irgun helping thousands of Jews flee Europe. Stavsky died in the Altalena incident during the explosion of ammunition stocks on board the ship and during exchanges of fire with Hagana forces.

Stavsky's grave

The irony of history is that Stavsky died 50 yards from the location where Chaim Arlosoroff was shot 15 years earlier.
