The Protestant Abrahamskirche is a listed church building in Welleringhausen , a district of Willingen in the Waldeck-Frankenberg district , ( Hesse ). The former fortified church stands on a hill above the village in the middle of a former fortified churchyard.

History and architecture

The simple Romanesque vault was built in the 12th century. The medieval roof structure has largely been preserved. The single -bay nave has an almost square floor plan, the choir is also square. The sturdy west tower is kept low and covered with a gable roof. Due to the identical roof pitch, the three structures are optimally coordinated with one another, the gradation is from east to west. The Romanesque window on the north side of the choir is walled up, the walls on the south and east sides are divided by small tracery windows in the late Gothic style. The heavy hanging domes in the interior create depressed conditions in the room. The triumphal arch is noticeably narrow, there were some such narrow arches in Romanesque village churches in the Waldeck area. The remains of gate posts are still preserved from the formerly fortified churchyard on which the church stands, presumably they belonged to the former fortification. Some grave steles from the 18th and 19th centuries can also be seen.

Furnishing

  • The altarpiece is a work from the beginning of the 17th century and a painted representation of the crucifixion can be seen in the shrine. The evangelists depicted next to it and separated by narrow columns are also painted. The extract shows the Mount of Olives under a carved crucifix.
  • The font was made in 1662.
  • The pulpit dates from the second half of the 17th century.
  • The carved stalls are labeled "1675".
  • The wall tabernacle from around 1700 is richly framed and decorated with carved angels.
  • The church door from around 1702 is a work by Josias Wolrat Brützel .
  • The bronze bell was probably cast in the 14th century; it is 66 cm high, the diameter is 58 cm. The poorly legible Latin inscription probably means in translation: The divine voice sounds so that no one gives up hope. The bell was welded in Nördlingen in 1982 because of a crack.

Renovations

Three renovations took place in the 20th century, during the works in 1927 and 1963 the interior was painted and the carvings and the altarpiece were restored. In 1963 the arrangement of the church stalls was given a new look by removing the central aisle. The children's funeral wreaths have been removed and some can be seen in the Wolfgang Bonhage Museum. The gallery above the organ once served as access to the tower; it was dismantled. The creation of an access to the coffin chamber in the tower caused cracks in the masonry, in 1997 this damage was repaired.
