The former abbey church of Saint-Nicolas , also known as Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption , is located in the small town of Trémolat in the French region of Aquitaine ( Dordogne department ). The medieval structure was declared a monument historique in 1913 .

Building history

Since tradition mentions that the monastery was founded in the 9th century or even earlier, it can be assumed that today's abbey church had a smaller predecessor, but nothing has survived. No documents have been preserved on the history of the Romanesque church building either. Parts of the single nave nave may date from the 11th century, but additional components were added in the 12th century. Today's baroque portal and the bell gable built at the same time - integrated into the tower roof - date from the 17th century.

Exterior construction

The angular, sparse and austere-looking exterior - Thorsten Droste even speaks of "hulking forms" - with its extremely narrow window openings is very likely due to the fact that the abbey church was also used as a fortified church , i. H. was conceived as a place of refuge in times of robbery gangs or marauding and looting soldiers. In any case, the Périgord is rich in fortifications (castles) and fortified churches.

inner space

The three bays of the single nave nave and the crossing are - as was common in Périgord at the time - vaulted with domes. The apse-free choir area and the two side arms of the transept , on the other hand, have barrel vaults . The capitals of the interior show - with the exception of a few vegetable and braided ribbon motifs - no ornamentation.

Frescoes

Within the blind arcades of the choir area, the remains of a Gothic fresco cycle with scenes from the Passion story (Entry into Jerusalem, Last Supper, betrayal and the capture of Christ) have been preserved. However, much is no longer recognizable.
