Acenaphthylene (acenaphthalene) is a white to slightly yellowish solid that belongs to the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons . Acenaphthylene is found in coal tar (approx. 0.3%) and in small amounts in petroleum .

Acenaphthylene is almost insoluble in water, but readily soluble in benzene , chloroform and heated ethanol . Acenaphthylene is mutagenic and irritating.

use

Most of the acenaphthylene is first hydrogenated to acenaphthene , which is required for the production of naphthalic anhydride and intermediates for plastics, dyes, color pigments, insecticides and pharmaceutical products.
