Achelstädt is a district of the municipality of Witzleben in the Ilm district ( Thuringia ) with 184 inhabitants (as of June 1, 2010).
geography
Achelstädt is located in the southern Thuringian Basin at an altitude of about 375 meters. To the east of the village lies the Osthausen Forest with the 433 meter high Achelstädter Berg and to the west the plains of the basin. Achelstädt is located on the Mettbach , a tributary of the Ilm . The southern neighbor is Witzleben and the northern Osthausen .
history
Achelstädt was probably founded around the year 750 under the name Ahhiliustat and is one of the older settlements in the area. Since 1583 it was called Achelstädt, popularly "Achelscht". Until 1920 it was part of the Kranichfeld office in the state of Saxony-Meiningen . After Thuringia was founded , the district of Arnstadt came into being , the successor to which is the Ilm district. In 1890 a steam dairy - one of the first in Thuringia - was built and gradually expanded. It served as a cooperative dairy for farmers from Achelstädt and the surrounding area. With the collectivization of agriculture in the GDR, a VEB Milchhof Erfurt (today: Milchwerke Thuringia) was established in Erfurt and the Achelstädter dairy was closed.
Attractions
Sights include the church, built in the 15th century in Romanesque style and expanded in the 17th century. All stones for the massive structure were broken in the Achelstädter Forest. In the 18th century a new pulpit and two galleries were installed.
An obelisk not far from the church is dedicated to the Franco-Prussian War of 1870/71 .
Two woad millstones in the village remind of the time of woad cultivation .
Economy and Transport
Achelstädt is an agricultural place. Some residents also work in the town of Stadtilm, about eight kilometers to the south, or in Erfurt, just under 20 kilometers to the north . The district town of Arnstadt is about 13 kilometers west of Achelstädt.
Roads connect Achelstädt with Osthausen (towards Erfurt) in the north and Witzleben (towards Arnstadt, Stadtilm and Kranichfeld) in the south. The nearest rail connections are in Stadtilm ( Arnstadt – Saalfeld line ) and Kranichfeld ( Ilmbahn to Weimar ).
