Achim von Arnim-Bärwalde (real name Achim von Arnim ; * March 24, 1848 ; † February 8, 1891 ) was a German history painter .

Life and origin

Achim von Arnim-Bärwalde was a grandson of the poet couple Achim and Bettina von Arnim . His parents were Freimund von Arnim (1812–1863) and his wife Anna geb. von Baumbach (1824–1848).

After the early death of his father, he inherited his property, in particular the castle and estate in Wiepersdorf , which he converted into a Fideikommissgut and whose first Fideikommissherr he became. Since he was not interested in the traditional occupations of his class - military service or an administrative career - he followed his inclinations and became an artist.

He went to Munich and began a life as a painter there. He was particularly interested in history painting , in which he became more and more known and earned a good reputation. Soon he took part in academic art exhibitions. He took part in the exhibitions in Berlin in 1876, 1877 and 1881, as well as in the international art exhibition in Düsseldorf . At the Düsseldorf General Art Exhibition, his painting The Last Moments of King Henry IV of England received praiseworthy attention; his love for subjects from English history made him particularly well known.

Design of Wiepersdorf Palace and Park

After he moved his residence back to Wiepersdorf , he immediately began to redesign the Wiepersdorf Palace . He built a new wing of the studio, which he designed artistically by painting the ceilings and walls. He painted a self-portrait in the door panel of the door to the studio. He also had an orangery built in 1888/89. At the same time, the park was redesigned and decorated with ancient statues from Roman and Greek legends and vases brought back from his travels to Italy. The castle church was rebuilt according to his plans, but only after his death in 1891. Achim von Arnim-Bärwalde was not married and was buried in the Arnim family cemetery next to the Wiepersdorf village church.

His style of painting had meanwhile also turned to native motifs and portrait painting. Examples include a picture of the castle and a portrait of his grandmother Bettina von Arnim.
