Achlydosa glandulosa ( Syn. Megastylis glandulosa ) is a kind from the family of orchids (Orchidaceae). It is endemic to New Caledonia . Achlydosa glandulosa forms its own subtribe Achlydosinae.

description

The terrestrial , herbaceous and perennial plants reach a height of 0.5 to 1 meter. The long-stalked leaves are thick and leathery, their color is light green. The leaf blade reaches a width of 1.4 to 4 centimeters.

The terminal, racemose inflorescence is slightly overhanging at the tip. The flowering period extends from September to mid-January. Four to 14 flowers are distributed on the top 10 to 40 centimeters of the inflorescence axis. The whole inflorescence and the flowers have glandular hairs. The flowers are mostly uniformly light green in color, rarely yellow, when they wither they turn yellowish-white. The middle sepal measures 1.8 to 2.3 centimeters. The lateral sepals are fused together in the lower half. The petals are wider than the lateral sepals, with the edges they adhere to the middle sepal. The lip is slightly thickened at the base and has two longitudinal, smooth or hairy keels. The blade of the lip is oval with a width of one centimeter, at the front it ends pointed. The lip contains nectar. The curved column is provided with a small transverse bulge shortly after the attachment point at the ovary. The stamen contains two pollinia that do not have an adhesive disc (Viscidium). The six-ribbed, oval capsule fruit contains numerous seeds that measure 0.6 to 0.9 millimeters in length by 0.2 millimeters in width.

distribution

Achlydosa glandulsoa only occurs in New Caledonia. Most of the sites are in the southern half of the island, at altitudes of 100 to 1250 meters, rarely up to 1500 meters. Achlydosa glandulosa occurs in sparse forests, in savannas with the tree species Melaleuca quinquenervia and in stony bushes. She avoids dry locations.

Systematics and botanical history

Achlydosa glandulsoa was described as Lyperanthus glandulosus by Rudolf Schlechter as early as 1906 . Schlechter placed the species in 1911 with a few other New Caledonian orchids in the genus Megastylis that he had newly established . Megastylis is assigned to the tribe Diurideae . Only investigations of the DNA revealed that Megastylis glandulosa is not closely related to the type species of the genus, Megastylis gigas , but rather belongs to the tribe Cranichideae . Therefore, in 2002 , Clements and Jones established their own genus Achlydosa for this species. This is carried out in its own subtribe Achlydosinae. Together with Pterostylis , Achlydosa represents a basal taxon within the tribe of Cranichideae.

The generic name Achlydosa is made up of the negative prefix a- and the Greek chlidosis , "ornament". It refers to the lip, which is quite simply designed and has no appendages. The species name glandulosa describes the glandular hair.
