The Akhmat Kadyrov Mosque in the Chechen capital Grozny is the largest mosque in Russia .

It is named after Akhmat Kadyrov , the former Mufti and President of the Chechen Republic, who was killed in a bomb attack on May 9, 2004 in Grozny.

The construction work on the banks of the Sunsha had started in the late 1980s, but was repeated several times. a. interrupted by the two Chechnya wars from 1994 to 1996 and 1999 to 2006 respectively . As of April 25, 2006, Turkish construction companies completed the construction in just 30 months for a total of $ 20 million. On October 17, 2008, the mosque, also known as the heart of Chechnya , finally opened.

The usable area of ​​the mosque (the place for the believers) is 5,000 square meters, it can hold a total of 10,000 people. The four minarets are 62 meters high. The outer and inner walls were built from rare travertine limestone and clad with white marble from the Turkish Marmara island , the walls were painted by Turkish masters with special long-lasting paints. The interior is illuminated by 36 chandeliers , which are cast from several tons of bronze and richly set with glass crystals. The total area of ​​the mosque area is 14 hectares . The building is designed to be earthquake-proof .

The mosque is located in the immediate vicinity of the Chechen muftiate . Their is also the Russian Islamic Kunta-Haji - University , the third of its kind in the Federation , connected, which opened on 20 August, 2009.
