Adalbert von Waltenhofen
Adalbert Carl Ritter von Waltenhofen zu Eglofsheimb (born May 14, 1828 in Admontbichl in Styria , † February 5, 1914 in Vienna ) was an Austrian physicist and electrical engineer .
Life
Adalbert von Waltenhofen was born as the son of the Imperial and Royal Court Councilor Carl Ritter von Waltenhofen zu Eglofsheimb and his wife N. von Waltenhofen (née Knaffl-Lenz von Fohnsdorf).
After studying in Vienna, he first became a grammar school teacher at the Graz Joanneum in 1850 , two years later professor at the Physics Institute of the University of Innsbruck and then from 1867 professor of physics at the technical university in Prague , where he built the Waltenhofen pendulum named after him in 1874 ( English Waltenhofen's pendulum ), a forerunner of today's eddy current brake . From 1883 to 1899 he was the first professor and later head of the Institute for Electrical Engineering at the Vienna University of Technology .
His daughter from his first marriage, N. von Waltenhofen, was married to his assistant Karl Zickler , born in Karlsbad, who later became a professor of electrical engineering at the Technical University in Brno.
Adalbert von Waltenhofen was married to Marie, nee Gottl Edle von Ottlilienfeld, the daughter of kuk Colonel Maximilian Gottl Edler von Ottlilienfeld and Anna Caj. Lorenz. They are all buried in the Waltenhofen-Gottl'schen family crypt in the Vienna Central Cemetery (Gate 2, Group 72C, Row 1, Number G6). In 1942, Waltenhofengasse in the Vienna district of Favoriten was named after him.
